Our Journey Together

Some questions remain…

As I prepare to leave from the UN terminal, some questions remain:
• Have we really made a difference? We come in, do some work, and then we leave. There are more that are coming after us…But we can leave! The Haitians cannot.
• How can we create sustainability in a country that never had any to begin with?
• What will happen to all of the garbage we’ve created?
• Has all the photo snapping while driving by been offensive?
Have we made the Haitians feel more poor just by being here, eating our own food, carrying our cameras, etc.
The effort continues…

“Do not forget Haiti,” my heart cries.
Do not forget – for this is the reality for many in the world.
Do not forget, for they have so much to teach us.
Do not forget.

“No immediate reports of damage…”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – “A mild 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti early on Tuesday 20 miles west southwest of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake struck at 1:26 a.m./0626 GMT at a depth of 6.2 miles, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.”

More aftershocks…

It’s 1:50 am. We’ve just had two major aftershocks that made the ground feel like undulating water. Most of us have moved outside the building.

Our mats are spread out wherever we can find some free space.

Grub on!

We are preparing to be interviewed by the local Haitian news…

The news building collapsed so we are outside under tarps. Seen here: Dr Maureen Tighe from Pittsburg & Judith Gelin, our Haitian team leader

Farewell

Some final notes…

Dear Blog Readers
These will be some of the last posts from Haiti. I will continue to upload photos as I gather them from team members and other relief workers. I will also continue to be in touch with Quisqueya Christian School and will post updates about the situation & recovery in Haiti. The rains are coming. Many are afraid the medical conditions; disease spread will worsen. I have no doubt.
There are many who still have not received aid. Poor organization and infrastructure identified Haiti before the quake, it has only gotten worse.
I don’t know if I will be back. This trip has changed my life and I know that this is the kind of work I was made for. i will have to figure out a way to continue my commitment to my clinical practice in Portland…perhaps one aid trip a year. There are so many that need help. Given all that I have been blessed with in my life, I feel a strong responsibility to share and help others.
Many of you have asked if this work is hard. It is. And it isn’t. Those who know me know how much I like sleep, a regular routine, exercise, good food, vegetables (!). I have not been able to enjoy any of those things here. My life as I have known it has been majorly disrupted. I have left patients that I care about in Portland, friends and family whom I miss.
But I tell you this work is a calling, and a calling is not hard to respond to. I feel touched and moved by the people I came here to serve, the haitians who have put their trust in me, the selflessness of other relief workers and medical people. There is always more to give – and I will keep giving as long as I am able.

It is important to thank the people who have made this trip possible.
Dave Sparks – at Island Graphics in Portland, Oregon. A wonderful man who has tirelessly been posting my blog and uploads. A great person to give business to.
Kaya Singer – my business coach, who has been singing praises along the way…and all the people at Sustainable Connections (BNI).
Andy Swanson, who talked me through some difficult situations and selflessly picked up every call.
To his parents, Karla and Andy Senior, for their generous donations.
Other donors: The Salms, Eliane Lingwood, Murry Jennings, all the good people and many patients from Urban Wellness group in Portland, Jason Zabell and his family in Chicago. Sacred Circle dance, an incredible group of people, Alex Kain and Ashley Henry. Thank you thank you thank you.

Please know the effort continues – recovery has only just begun & some have committed 3 years to aid Haiti. This is Haiti’s only chance. Some good organizations I have worked with who need donations:

Loma Linda University

All the best & keep checking for more posts!
